St. Leonhard pilgrimage

The Leonhardifahrt in Benediktbeuern, a pilgrimage to honour St. Leonhard, is one of the most important in Bavaria. It takes place at the Sunday next to 6th november, which is the name day of Leonhard, patron saint of farm animals.

At 09:00 nearly 50 horse-drawn carriages and many horsemen start their pilgrimage from the village center to the monastery. There nearly 230 horses and numerous pilgrims receive the priest’s blessing. At 10:00 a festive pilgrimage service is celebrated in the basilica. Afterwards the feastfully decorated carriages return to the village center. Beside women and men in traditional costumes there are even some theme carriages and bands taking part.
